When you think about weight loss and achieving it you will no doubt think that cutting out junk food and rubbish like chocolate would be a good idea. Yet, new research suggests that chocolate could aid your efforts.
What did the study involve?
In a study published in the International Archives of Medicine, volunteers aged between 19 and 67 were split into three groups.
One group were asked to follow a strict low-carb diet, with another asked to follow a low-carb diet while also eating 42 grams of dark (81%) chocolate daily, with the final group asked to eat their normal diet.
Each of the volunteers had their body weight and blood chemistry tracked, before, during and after the study. With each of the volunteers also asked to complete a questionnaire that would be used to asses the quality of their sleep and general well-being.
What were the results?
As you would expect the two groups that experienced the most weight loss were those that followed the low-carb diet.
However what was most surprising was that the group that ate the dark chocolate alongside their diet lost the most weight, with a 10% difference in weight loss.
Most surprisingly was the fact that the weight they lost did not return, despite the other low-carb group regaining all their lost weight within 3 weeks.
This group also experienced the best sleep and well-being, with their blood cholesterol also significantly reduced.
Johannes Bohannon, research director of the nonprofit Institute of Diet and Health had this to say about the results:
“To our surprise, the effect of chocolate is real.”
“It is not enough to just consume chocolate, but in combination with exercise and reduction in carbohydrates, our data indicate that chocolate can be a weight loss accelerator.”
”The researchers suggest that high-cocoa chocolate has the potential to enhance other diets as well.”
“The best part about this discovery, is that you can buy chocolate everywhere, cheaply and without having to believe diet gurus or purchase expensive nutrition products over the Internet.”
So there you have it, you can lose weight and eat chocolate. However, please choose dark chocolate and as with anything you must eat it in moderation.
