Detox for weight loss

Detox for weight loss

If you are still struggling to lose those extra pounds you put on over Christmas and New Year perhaps you could try a detox.

A detox is a great way to lose a few pounds and motivate you into finally taking control of your diet, hopefully inspiring you to get into shape and avoiding the potential health risks of being overweight.

Why do you need to detox?

Unfortunately every day we are exposed to toxins, whether from the air we breathe, the food we eat or the drinks we consume.

These toxins build up within our system and can affect many of our bodies systems, with health issues arising when their levels rise too high.

Weight gain is one issue, as well as a reduced ability to lose the excess weight.

By undergoing a detox you will be removing these toxins and the stored waste from within your body.

This can result in almost instant weight loss and improved health so is recommended every now and then.

Dangers of detoxing

Detoxing can be dangerous if you take it to the extreme. Some particular detox diets recommend increasing your water intake.

Yet if you drink too much water then you will be putting your health at risk, such as in the case of Dawn Page Farrington, who in 2008 suffered permanent brain damage after drinking 6 pints of water a day.

There is also a risk that losing weight too quickly could leave you suffering from headaches and dizziness, which are reported problems associated with the Maple Syrup diet, a diet made famous by Beyonce who claimed that she lost 20lbs using it before her role in Dreamgirls.

Detoxing for an extended period could leave you lacking into vital nutrients so it is recommended that each detox lasts only a few days at a time (14 days maximum).

Tips for a successful detox

To detox safely and effectively here are a few tips that will help:

  1. Cut back on those processed foods, for example take aways, sugar, dairy, wheat, caffeinated drinks and alcohol.
  2. Drink 8 glass of water a day (not pints).
  3. Include foods in your diet that can naturally aid the detoxification process; raw seeds, oily fish, green vegetables, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cabbage, garlic, onions and leeks.
  4. Start your day with a glass of fresh lemon juice to help with your digestion.
  5. Use lemon zest on salads and fish to again aid digestion.
  6. Drink green tea as it contains antioxidants that can remove those toxins, without increasing your caffeine intake.
  7. Add coriander to meals as it can aid detoxification.
  8. Take a supplement to aid your detox along with a multivitamin.
  9. Gentle exercise.

It is to be hoped that once your detox has concluded you will be feeling slimmer with new healthier eating habits.

Just remember to continue eating healthily and getting regular exercise or the weight you have lost will quickly return.

Common detox diets

There are various types of detox diet, here are a few of the more popular ones:

Lemonade Diet

One of the most popular detox diets is called the Lemonade Diet or The Master Cleanser.

It was originally written in the 1940s by Stanley Burroughs, although it has undergone a few changes since that time (the latest iteration was published in 1976).

Detox for weight lossThis diet is liquid only consisting of 3 things; a lemonade type drink, a salt water drink and a herbal laxative tea.

Obviously eating nothing will cause weight loss, although you are likely to experience hunger cravings and may feel tired, sick and aching.

Super Cleanse

The Super Cleanse Diet was created by Adina Niemerow who has worked as a personal chef to various celebrities.

There are various cleanses offered by this diet, each dependent on your own circumstances, although the aim of each cleanse is to promote long lasting health and beauty.

Fresh Fruit Cleanse

Created by yoga teacher Leanne Hall, this diet involved eating a large amount of fruit and vegetables with the claimed benefits.

  • Restored metabolism
  • Eliminate excess mucous from your digestive system
  • Dissolve inorganic minerals that contribute to arthritis

Essentially this particular detox diet enabled you to detox gently while enjoying filling fruit based meals.

Diuretic Diet

The Diuretic Diet is not helpful for reducing body fat but is used for fluid retention or water weight.

The issue with this kind of diet is that they are only to be used sparingly, only for a few days a month.

There is a risk of kidney and liver problems with these types of diet so it is advisable that you speak to a doctor beforehand.

Sugar Detox Diet

This particular diet was created by nutritionist Brooke Alpert and dermatologist Dr Patricia Farris who discovered that the average American consumes more than 70 pounds of sugar each year.

By reducing your intake of sugar you will be able to get your blood sugar levels under control, boost energy levels, lose weight and improve the health of your skin.

You Are What You Eat

Gillian McKeith nutritionist and TV personality is the creator of this diet, which has become popular thanks to her numerous TV appearances.

This diet encourages you to eat a vegetarian diet for the first 8 weeks, with small amounts of fish and chicken allowed thereafter.

You are advised to eat small meals frequently and to snack on fruit or vegetables if hungry.

Critics of this diet say that it is quite strict and difficult to follow, which may cause many casual dieters to quit.

Could a supplement help you to detox?

There are various supplements available to help you to detox. Primarily by helping to remove that stored waste from your colon.

This detoxification will help to remove in some cases several pounds of fecal waste from your colon and intestines.

This process can also help to remove those toxins too.

Just remember a supplement should not be relied upon indefinitely, your own efforts will ensure you see continued weight loss and good health for years to come.

Which supplement is best for detoxing?

Although you might have seen trial offers for various detox supplements but these are best avoided.

Trial offers inevitably lead to disappointment once you realise how much you are going to be charged.

You would be better off buying a supplement such as DetoxPlus, which is available from Evolution Slimming at an incredibly cheap £19.95.

Using DetoxPlus can naturally cleanse your colon, while reducing bloating and constipation. It has also been shown to aid your own weight loss efforts.
