Diet drinks causing weight gain

Diet drinks causing weight gain

While you may believe that drinking that diet cola will aid your weight loss efforts a new study has concluded that the opposite is true.

The researchers at Texas Christian University have shown that those who choose to drink a diet option rather than a full sugar version were more likely to choose unhealthy foods.

The reason for this is that the artificial sweeteners that these diet drinks are made from fail to suppress sugar cravings, therefore people tend to look for sugary alternatives to feed their cravings.

What did the study involve?

This study, which has been published in the journal Appetite, had a team of volunteers given a cup of either a sugar-sweetened drink, an unsweetened drink or one that contained artificial sweeteners.

After they were given the drinks the volunteers were monitored to see what foods they chose to eat afterwards as well as their reaction to seeing pictures of high calorie foods.

What was the result of the study?

The result of the study showed that those who consumed the drink containing artificial sweeteners were most likely to choose the sugary products afterwards.

Sarah Hill, an associate professor of psychology at the university had this to say about the results:

“It seems that drinking a non-caloric drink may prime you to choose unhealthy food items. Those foods are on your mind.”

Any other proof?

Earlier this year another study was undertaken looking at how low-calorie diet drinks lead to weight gain.

During this study a team of researchers at John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health looked at the national patterns in adult drink consumption and calorie intake.

They discovered that those who tend to drink diet drinks were more likely to have a higher BMI and were also more likely to consume more snack food.

They concluded that artificial sweeteners that are found in the diet drinks disrupted appetite control leading to enhanced sugar cravings.

Why else should diet drinks be avoided?

A study undertaken in March by the University of Iowa found another reason why you should avoid diet drinks.

They discovered that drinking just 2 cans daily lead to a 30% more chance of you suffering a heart attack or stroke later in life.

What should you be drinking?

If you want to lose weight and live a healthy life then we would recommend plain old tap water. It contains zero calories but also numerous health benefits.

For instance it can help flush out toxins that prevent weight loss, plus the removal of these toxins can help improve the health of your skin.

Water can also help cut cravings as you will find that those supposed food cravings are actually your body telling you that it is thirsty.
