DietDash Mobile Game Helps with Weight Loss

DietDash Mobile Game Helps with Weight Loss

Weight loss can be difficult and is rarely fun, which is why so many people struggle to lose weight and even fewer manage to keep the weight off long-term.

Many will try calorie counting or other laborious dieting method, but this may not prove to be successful.

This could all change though as researchers from Drexel University have started to develop a mobile game called DietDash that they claim could help you “control unhealthy eating habits and ultimately lose weight”.

Evan Forman, the researcher leading the project states:

“Millions of people are trying to lose weight, and they are going about it in a reasonable way – by trying to reduce calories.”

“But you’re going to slip from your diet plan. That pretty much happens to everyone. You could say the secret of helping people actually lose weight is preventing these lapses, so we concentrated on how to best do that.”

How does DietDash work?

The DietDash mobile game requires the participant to tell the researcher what types of unhealthy food they are most likely to binge on. This food is then added to the game.

As you play you will be asked to press certain keys to respond to different types of foods, including both healthy and unhealthy foods.

The idea behind the game is to improve inhibitory control, or in simpler terms to “stop you from giving into unhealthy cravings”.

As the participants inhibitory control improves the speed of the game increases.

The participants are expected to play this game for 8 minutes daily for 6 weeks. With another app designed to detect habits in the participants eating habits.

Does DietDash work?

At the present time DietDash has not been tested, the researchers are currently looking for participants in their trial.

  2. I would love to try this out. I’ve always been very thin until I became ill and subsequently was put on life time steroids due to Hypopituitary Disease causing adrenal insufficiency and hypothyroidism. This caused alot of weight gain (doubled my body weight) over 5 year period no matter how little it seamed I ate. If there is a way to try to adjust what I do eat to lose some weight, I’m willing to try.
