Dieting While Pregnant

Dieting While Pregnant

The belief that when you are pregnant you should be eating for two is very misunderstood. You should try and maintain a healthy weight during pregnancy, without taking things to the extreme.

While you are pregnant, you don’t necessarily need to double the amount you are eating. Around 15-20% of pregnant women are categorised as obese.

Being overweight while pregnant can cause complications, so it’s worth trying to get your weight down before you conceive.

What Diet is recommended?

During pregnancy, all you need to do is eat healthily and make sure you are getting all the nutrients you and your baby need to stay strong.

You will probably feel more hungry than usual, but you don’t need to go overboard. On the other hand, extreme diets while pregnant should be completely avoided. It’s not a sensible time to be putting your body through a gruelling regime.

Pregnant womanDieting while pregnant is a tricky and controversial subject, because people have such mixed opinions.

There is a lot of debate over what you should and shouldn’t eat whilst pregnant. It’s a difficult area for scientists to study because they cannot try out things with pregnant women, as it is not worth the risk involved. So there isn’t a huge amount of research to go on.

If you are pregnant and thinking of going on a diet then make sure you consult your doctor or a medical professional first. The last thing you want to do is put your baby at risk by going on an extreme diet.

What Diet should be avoided?

If you have never really dieted before, then doing a tough diet when you are pregnant probably isn’t a good idea.

However, if there is a time to start thinking about making your diet healthier it’s while you are pregnant. Eating the right foods enables your baby to grow and develop properly.

While you are pregnant it’s crucial that you don’t completely cut out any of the major food groups. This is what a lot of the most popular diets ask people to do, and it’s not healthy.

Each food group serves a vital purpose. For example, cutting out carbs is dangerous, especially when you are pregnant because you will be lacking in energy.

You can however, cut down on foods that have little nutritional value such as cakes, biscuits, crisps and other foods that are high in sugar and fat. Try and eat these types of foods in moderation. There are also some foods that should be completely avoided during pregnancy because they can be harmful to your baby.

In summary, dieting whilst pregnant should be avoided. It’s a time when you need to be at your strongest.

A lot of diets can make you feel weak and deny you vital nutrients. Don’t make any major changes to your diet while you are pregnant such as completely cutting out a food that you usually have regularly. Maintaining a healthy, varied diet is the most sensible thing you can do.
