While it is often thought that people will tend to gain weight over the winter months, this is not because of the cold.
In fact the cold could actually help you to lose weight.
Why do you tend to gain weight in the winter?
There are a number of reasons why we tend to gain weight during winter.
One of the reasons is that we tend to ease off on our usually healthier lifestyle choices, possibly as we are covered with clothes rather than showing our bodies.
On the lead up to Christmas and the New Year there will also be a number of parties and festivities where various unhealthy foods and alcohol will be served.
The bad weather and a lack of day light can also have an impact too, as it can effect your moods.
This can lead to comfort eating in an attempt to cheer yourself up.
How can the cold help with weight loss?
When you are cold you will shiver, which according to science helps your body to produce hormones that can cause the production of brown fat to increase.
Brown fat is good at generating body heat to help keep us warm. A by-product of which is more calories being burnt.
Other tips to ward off weight gain during winter
If you wish to avoid weight gain during the winter time then the following tips could help.
First try to limit your intake of junk, which can be difficult with the parties you will be going to.
However, you can limit your intake by eating healthily before you go out, meaning there is less room for the junk.
Alcohol is also another danger as it is full of liquid calories. There is no need to avoid the fun, and by all means have a little drink but try to make better choices of drink.
For example, beer and cocktails are full of calories, while vodka is not.
You may not want to drink as much water during winter as you may want something a little warmer. If this is the case then I suggest making your own soups or stews using fresh seasonal vegetables.
Not only will it help with your water intake and help hydrate you, but it can also ensure you are consuming the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy.
As for exercise, it may not be the nicest of weather so you will no doubt have reservations about going out to exercise or even going to the gym.

Finally, I would usually recommend that you try and get plenty of sleep if weight loss is your aim, and the winter months are the perfect time for it.
With the early nights, it is the perfect opportunity to get a few minutes more every night. I’m sure your body will thank you when you wake up feeling refreshed and full of energy ready for the day ahead.
Remember just because it is winter it is not an excuse to slack off. The cold is not an excuse to be lazy. If you put in a little effort now then you wont have to work so hard to get ready for the summertime.
