All you have to do is start to eat slower for weight loss.

Even scientific studies have revealed that those who eat slower tend to be slimmer than those that rush their food.

How can eating slower aid weight loss?

When you eat your body will suppress the production of the hormone ghrelin, which controls your hunger. Your body will also release other hormones too, for example cholecystokinin, peptide YY and glucagon-like peptide-1, which are used to send a signal to your brain that you are full.

Unfortunately it takes around 20 minutes for this process to occur, which for those who eat quickly could result in a considerable amount of extra calories being consumed.

What proof is there?

In one particular study a team of researchers looked at the eating habits of 4,000 middle aged mean and women. In particular they looked at how fast they ate their food.

They discovered that those who ate the fastest were often the heaviest, and had gained the most weight since they were aged 20.

Another study looked at the weight changes of 529 men over the course of an 8 year period. With the researchers finding that the fast eaters gained over twice as much weight as those who ate slowly.

How can you eat slower?

You could also try putting your cutlery down between bites, or taking a sip of water between mouthfuls too.

Other tips include:

  • Eating at a table rather than standing
  • Removing distractions so you focus on your food instead
  • Have a conversation
  • Dim the lights
  • Play slow mellow music

Whatever you do, the research all points to those who eat slowly being the slimmest.
