Sometimes we are just so desperate to lose weight that we are willing to try anything to achieve our goals.
Unfortunately fad diets promise fast weight loss but are often dangerous and are not worth even trying.
Another issue with fad diets is that even if you do lose weight once you stop them the weight will surely return, often with interest.
How can you tell if your diet is a fad?
With so many different types of diet available it can be difficult to know whether it is a fad diet or not.
Here are some general rules to tell if your current diet is a fad diet:
1. It eliminates one or more food groups.
2. The diet recommends that you eat only one food group.
3. It promises impossible results without any effort.
4. It guarantees that you will lose more than 2 pounds a week.
5. The diet is endorsed by a celebrity (it is incredibly unlikely that a celebrity has actually lost weight using the same diet, some endorsements are even faked).
6. The diet is not proven, but bases its effectiveness on testimony alone.
Rather than wasting your time on a diet that could cause you permanent harm would it not be a better idea to stick to more proven methods.
Proven weight loss methods
Diet and exercise is still the best method you can use to lose weight.
Cut back on the junk food and takeaways, instead eat more fresh fruits, vegetables and lean protein sources such as chicken or turkey.
The fruit and vegetables will provide you with various vitamins and minerals without filling you with calories, while the protein rich foods are slower to digest than fatty foods or carbs so you are less likely to experience food cravings.
To keep your cravings at bay you should also consider drinking more water. Often your body will mistake thirst for hunger so keep a bottle to hand just in case.
Water has other weight loss benefits too, for instance it can flush out those toxins that prevent weight loss, which will also give you clearer skin and healthier hair too.
Finally, for any successful weight loss attempt you will need to exercise.
This does not mean that you have to spend every waking hour in the gym, just 30 minutes of intense exercise 2-3 times a week should suffice.
Also do not rely solely on cardio for your exercise, weight training is one of the best exercises you can do to burn fat. In addition, building extra muscle will aid your slimming efforts as it has been shown that muscle burns more calories than fat, even at rest.
Fad diets may be popular in the short term, but they are not recommended if you want to keep the weight off long term. They may also be dangerous, and why would you want to risk your health just to lose a few pounds?
Stick to a healthy lifestyle, you may lose the weight a little slower but you know that you are doing it safely and the weight is more likely to stay off.
