During the April 25th 2014 episode of the Dr Oz Show, Dr Mehmet Oz spoke to Dr Alwin Lewis about the Five Bite Diet, a diet that only allows you to eat 5 bites of food per meal.
What does the Five Bite Diet involve?
Those who choose to undertake this diet should skip breakfast, and eat 5 bites of food at lunch and dinner.
Dr Lewis also recommends that you take a multivitamin every day.
This diet was created after looking at the eating habits of gastric-bypass patients, who are not physically capable of eating more than just a few bites of food following their bariatric surgery.
Benefits of the Five Bite Diet
As well as the obvious weight loss benefits there is reason to suggest that low calorie diets such as this could promote longevity.
There have been various scientific studies that drastically reducing calorie intake could prevent disease, as eating less will minimise the damage caused to your cells during the process of metabolising your food.
Eating more often and in large amounts causes your body to constantly release insulin that can cause inflammation to occur and for fat to be stored.
Is the Five Bite Diet recommended?
Neither myself or Dr Oz were convinced that the Five Bite Diet is the best option for weight loss.
Of course cutting your calorie intake by such a huge amount will promote weight loss, however I do not think it is the best approach.
Dr Oz himself thought that this particular diet was a gateway to eating disorders such as anorexia.
It is important that you realise that should you decide to try the Five Bite Diet that the food you eat is nutrient-dense.
Recommended method of weight loss
You have probably heard it time and again, but the best way to lose weight and keep it off long term is through a healthy diet and regular exercise.
Forget about fad diets like the Five Bite Diet, cut out the junk food and takeaways while eating a diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables instead.
Also increase the amount of protein you consume, turkey and chicken are two of the best sources. As this will help keep you fuller for longer, while keeping your energy levels high.
You should also get plenty of exercise too, 20 minutes of intense exercise 3-4 times a week will make huge changes to your appearance and to your overall health.
Finally drink more water, it can flush out those toxins that cause weight gain and can help you to cut back on those food cravings too.
Weight loss can be hard but it does not have to be complicated, just stick to a healthy lifestyle and you will eventually see the rewards.
