8 Good Carbs for Weight Loss

While low carbs diets are still popular with many saying how this type of diet has helped them lose weight, the truth is that without carbs in your diet your overall health will suffer.

Without carbs you are likely to suffer from:

  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches

When carbs are consumed your body converts the majority of it into glucose (sugar), which is then used to fuel your body.

Of course some carbs are better than others, some carbs are quickly digested which result in a spike in your blood sugar levels.

This spike is short-lived though, and as the sugar is burnt quickly you will experience a blood sugar crash that will result in further cravings for carbs. Ultimately eating too many of these bad carbs will cause weight gain to occur.

Examples of bad carbs include:

  • White bread
  • White rice
  • Potatoes
  • Corn
  • White pasta
  • Cereals

Instead of eating these bad carbs that will cause weight gain if consumed in excess, try some of these good carbs instead.

Good carb #1: Chickpeas

Chickpeas are low on the glycemic index so eating them can certainly help curb your hunger.

There is also research that suggests that eating them can help to lower cholesterol levels, which can help prevent heart disease.

Good carb #2: Sweet Potatoes

While most potatoes we would class as a ‘bad’ carb, sweet potatoes are a good alternative.

They are classed as a complex carbohydrate and contain simple starches, they are also a good source of fibre and various other minerals too.

If you workout often then eating sweet potatoes could help with recovery times.

Good carb #3: Oats

Oats are ideal for breakfast as they are easy to prepare but will offer various benefits.

For example, they can help fill you up and keep you feeling full as they are a good source of fibre that is slow to digest.

Good carb #4: Banana

Banana for weight lossBananas are best eaten both before and after a workout as it is a fast-acting carb that also contains potassium fibre and manganese.

Good carb #5: Peas

Some may say that peas are a ‘bad’ carb as it does contain more sugar than many other vegetables.

We would class it as a good carb though as it contains various phytonutrients and antioxidants that offer various health benefits.

Good carb #6: Blueberries

If you are peckish between meals then you can’t go too far wrong by eating a handful of blueberries.

They are a healthy snack that contains various vitamins and minerals.

Good carb #7: Greek Yoghurt

Greek yoghurt is a good healthy snack option not only because it is a good carb, but also because it is a good source of protein too.

Protein has various benefits, including the ability to keep you feeling full, to help keep energy levels high and to help repair damaged muscles post-workout.

Good carb #8: Corn

Corn, or popcorn (without butter or syrup) is a good carb as it is a type of whole grain that contains various antioxidants.
