New research has proven a long believed theory that grapefruit could help with your weight loss efforts.
A team of researchers at the University of California have discovered that the juice from a grapefruit could help keep blood sugar levels under control, with those who drunk the juice alongside a fatty diet noticing that you put on less weight.
What did the study involve?
The researchers fed mice a diet of fatty foods for 3 months with some given grapefruit juice, while the others were given water.
Those mice given the grapefruit juice gained 18% less weight than those given water to drink.
Other benefits noted were that the mice also had lower blood sugar and insulin levels, making the researchers believe that grapefruit could be as effective as some prescription drugs for controlling blood sugar levels, which is a key part of managing diabetes.
While the research is impressive and promising you must remember that these results were found with rats and not humans.
Further tests will need to be undertaken to see what effects, if any will be seen on human subjects.
Mariette Abrahams, a dietician had this to say about those tempted by grapefruit diets such as the Hollywood Diet, a diet created in the 1930s that is said to be used by celebrities such as Kylie Minogue:
“Grapefruit should be part of a healthy balanced diet, but it shouldn’t be the focus of the diet.”
Even the researchers themselves are urging on the side of caution, with Professor Napoli, of the University of California stating:
“We see all sorts of scams about nutrition.”
“But these results, based on controlled experiments, warrant further study of the potential health-promoting properties of grapefruit juice.”
For healthy weight loss it is all about balance and moderation, you cannot focus purely on one food group in the hope that this will be the miracle cure for your weight.
Eat healthily, get regular exercise and drink plenty of water and you will soon start seeing the rewards for your hard work.
