5 Habits that are Causing Weight Gain

Have you noticed that you have started to gain a little weight recently but are struggling to pinpoint exactly what is causing it?

So what are these habits that are causing weight gain?

#1: You are suffering from stress

If you are suffering from stress, either from work or another source then it maybe causing your recent weight gain.

Stress causes your body to produce excess cortisol, which is a hormone that if not kept in check can result in a rise in your appetite.

Obviously if you are not able to keep your appetite in check then you will likely consume more calories than you should, which will obviously cause weight gain to occur.

There are various ways that you can go about combatting stress, if you suffer from stress then perhaps you could try one of the following methods to reduce it:

  • Meditate
  • Breathe deeply
  • Laugh
  • Dance
  • Read a book
  • Have a nice bath

#2: You skip meals

You wouldn’t think that skipping meals could cause weight gain but it could be a factor.

Although you maybe savings calories from that meal, chances are you will make up for it at the next meal as your appetite will be larger.

You may also find that skipping meals could result in your metabolism slowing, which is bad news as this is responsible for burning off those calories before they are stored as fat.

#3: You stay up too late

If you stay up late then it is quite possible that you are not getting enough sleep.

A lack of sleep can cause your body to produce more ghrelin, which is a hormone that will stimulate your appetite.

I would suggest that you aim for a minimum of 7 hours sleep every night if weight gain is becoming an issue.

Weight LossYou should avoid drinking caffeine too close to your bedtime, and to also switch off any distractions that may affect your sleep. This means the laptop and phone should be left out of your bedroom.

#4: You don’t drink water

What you drink also has an impact on your weight, which is why I would suggest that you swap your usual soft drinks for water.

Soft drinks contain ‘empty calories’ which are so-called because they offer no nutritional benefit.

Water on the other hand contains no calories at all so can be consumed guilt free. It can also help curb your appetite and is useful for removing built up toxins from within your body.

I would also suggest that you cut down on those hot drinks full of added sugar, milk and cream. These also contain unnecessary calories.

#5: You eat processed foods

Processed foods are full of sugar and fat that will likely cause weight gain if consumed in large quantities.

I suggest that you either cut them from your diet entirely, or restrict them to a once a week treat.

Consider swapping them for fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as fibre and protein-rich foods.
