In the past you have most likely heard the phrase “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”, but new research has shown the benefit of eating other foods as well, such as onions for example.
The reason why is that certain types of foods contain flavonoids that can help keep the fat away, or to put it in a simpler way, certain foods can stop body fat from forming.
What research was undertaken?
There are over 6,000 different types of flavonoids found within fruits and vegetables, with the one most commonly known to aid weight loss called flavan-3-ol, which is found in green tea.
Previous studies have only looked at smaller studies, but this particular (reported by Medical News Today) looked at a much larger scale.
This study involved over 124,000 men and women between the ages of 27-65 between the year 1986 to 2011.
Every 4 years the participants were asked to complete a questionnaire asking what foods they ate, to see if there was anything they ate that gave them any weight loss benefit.
While there is no solid proof that the flavonoids found in certain foods were more beneficial than others the following quote was released from Medical News Today:
“Anthocyanin’s, flavonoid polymers and flavonols were associated with the least weight gain; every additional 10 mg of anthocyanins, 138 mg of flavonoid polymers and 7 mg of flavonols consumed daily were associated with 0.16-0.23 pounds less weight gained each 4 years.”
