With Christmas just around the corner you may find that you have a lot of upcoming parties and engagements with friends and family.
Instead of stressing that these parties will cause weight gain just relax as a study undertaken back in 2007 has shown that laughter can help to burn calories.
What did the study involve?
In the 2007 study published in the International Journal of Obesity a team of researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville looked at how many calories were burnt through genuine laughter.
They chose 31 men and 63 women for the study, each aged between 18 and 34.
The study itself involved the volunteers looking for 90 minutes either at boring video clips or those chosen specifically to cause laughter.
How can you lose weight by laughing?
The researchers discovered that when the volunteers laughed, their heart rates increased, which will lead to extra calories being burnt.
For those laughed hardest (for over 20 seconds) it was noted that their heart rate increased by an average of 17%. This means that for 15 minutes of laughter you could burn between 10 and 40 extra calories.
While not a lot, it can add up over the course of an evening.
Calorie burning is not the only benefit of laughter either, as it can also help to relieve stress.
When you are feeling stressed your body will produce excess levels of a hormone known as cortisol.
This hormone can cause food cravings, which will obviously have a negative impact on your weight. Especially at this time of the year when temptation is around every corner.
So this Christmas and New Year stop getting stressed out, go and have fun, have a laugh with your family and friends and experience the weight loss benefits of laughter.
