Originally pancakes were a way to use up the fatty foods before the 40 days of Lent, where people would fast.

Nowadays pancake day is less of a religious holiday and celebrated more for overindulgence.

Who can resist a pancake made of batter fried in a pan? Maybe it would be a better idea to try a healthy pancake recipe instead?

How many calories does a pancake contain?

A healthier whole-grain pancake that weighs approximately 32 grams will contain around 77 calories, 13 grammes of carbs with 2 grammes of both fat and protein.

Lose weight on pancake dayBuying a pancake from a bakery or a restaurant however will greatly increase these numbers, especially if you add a sugary or high calorie topping.

Pancakes are high in carbohydrates

One of the biggest issues with pancakes is that they are usually made from refined grains, that are particularly high in carbohydrates that we all know can cause weight gain if too many are consumed.

If possible you should try to avoid these refined carbohydrates as they are known as bad carbs.

Doing so will help limit your calorie intake, reduce cravings and your blood sugar levels.

A healthy alternative

To make healthy pancakes you just need to make them using whole-grain flour.

A suggestion would be to mix oats, skimmed milk, grated apple, an egg, wheat germ, cinnamon and whole grain flour together to make a healthy batter.

To top your pancakes use a low fat yoghurt or fresh fruit.

Just because you are trying to lose weight does not mean you have to stop eating all your favourite foods.

By choosing healthier ingredients you can still get a great tasting pancake without ruining your diet and any good work you have done up to that point.

Don’t forget

Even the healthier pancakes should be eaten in moderation, which is good because pancake day is just one day of the year.

To lose weight and keep it off long term you need to improve your general eating habits, cut out the junk and replace with plenty of fresh foods such as fruit, vegetables and lean meat.

Also, exercise can go a long way to helping you achieve your weight loss goals.
