With the Christmas festivities well and truly over and with the New Year almost upon us you may be starting to worry about all that extra weight you have put on.

#1: Go to bed early

If you are not getting enough sleep then your body will start to produce excess levels of cortisol that cause hunger cravings.

Get at least 7 hours every night and you will find that your cortisol levels are lower, resulting in fewer cravings.

A lack of sleep also causes a drop in your bodies production of growth hormones, so if you are planning on building muscle in the gym this New Year a lack of sleep can affect your chances of being successful.

#2: Eat plenty of protein

Protein is incredibly important for building and repairing muscle tissue, which is why you should be aiming to eat around 1.5 grams of protein for every pound you weigh.

As we all know muscle helps burn more calories than fat; even while resting. Plus muscle looks infinitely better than fat.

#3: Watch those carbs

While we should be watching the amount of carbs we eat, it is probably best that you take more care to eat the right kind of carbs.

Carbohydrates are important for your body as it provides you with energy.

Just try to avoid refined carbs such as white bread, white pasta and white rice. Choose a wholemeal alternative.

#4: Start lifting

As mentioned above, one of the best ways to lose fat and that gut is by increasing your muscle mass.

Lift weightsThis means that you should hit the gym hard, and lift heavy.

#5: Try some HIIT

Are you making the mistake when you visit the gym of spending hour upon hour on the treadmill doing steady state cardio.

If you are then you should know that a much better alternative would be HIIT or High Intensity Interval Training.

Not only will you burn more calories while at the gym, but you will also burn more calories once you leave the gym too.

#6: Have sex

If you want to boost your testosterone levels that will help your efforts to gain muscle mass then the experts recommend you get regular exercise, a good nights sleep and maybe surprisingly sex.

Sex can act as a stress-reliever that can reduce cortisol production that may reduce the amount of testosterone your body can produce.

While those above tips will go some way to achieving your aim of losing your gut, this all depends on how large it is to begin with.

You cannot expect miracles but even if you are quite large to start with time and effort you can reach your goals.
