Although the name of this diet sounds exotic this does not necessarily mean that you are going to be eating foods that you have never heard of that are likely to be difficult to buy.

The reality is that this diet will be providing you with heart healthy foods that are found in countries near the Mediterranean Sea.

What is the Mediterranean Diet?

Most diets these days focus on you eating fewer carbohydrates and fats, with more protein.

Every meal you eat while undertaking the Mediterranean Diet should include some form of healthy fat. While bread is acceptable you should not be using butter or margarine for flavour but an olive oil dip instead.

Salt is also limited, instead fresh herbs and spices will be used.

One of the main benefits of this diet is that it can reduce the risk of cardiovascular (heart) disease.

Lots of research has gone into this conclusion, with researchers also showing how the Mediterranean Diet can help reduce the risk of Cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

As healthy fats have replaced dairy you will be consuming more unsaturated fat rather than saturated that cause many health problems including weight gain.

The healthy fast found in olive oil, fatty fish and nuts can help reduce your LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, which can keep your blood pressure low, prevent blood clots and reduce the chances of suffering a heart attack.

Benefits of red wine on the Mediterranean Diet

Those on the Mediterranean Diet often drink red wine, which when drunk in moderation can also reduce the risk of heart disease.

Women and men over 65 are allowed 5 ounces of red wine daily, while men under 65 can consume 10 ounces.

Is the Mediterranean Diet a good idea?

If you want to improve your heart health then the Mediterranean Diet is a good idea. Furthermore all the other changes will certainly have a positive affect your waistline.

Fresh fruit, vegetables, nuts, fish and poultry are great foods to add to any diet, while cutting back on the dairy will also help with your weight loss efforts and overall health.

The Mediterranean Diet is growing in popularity with many people reaping the rewards of healthy eating.

This is not a fad diet like some available, but is more of a lifestyle change.
