With the new year almost upon us it maybe time to start thinking about your new year resolutions.

One of the most popular resolutions is to lose weight, which unfortunately many of you wont succeed at.

Is there a possible reason why you are unable to lose weight? New research may have an answer for you.

According to research at the University of Exeter and the University of Bristol there is a reason why those people who lose weight often regain the lost weight, often with interest.

They discovered that as humans evolved they couldn’t always rely on a constant supply of food, not like today, so our subconscious has been designed to deal with the threat of famine, where your metabolism and appetite will change accordingly.

What research was undertaken?

The researchers created a mathematical model to test their theory and to understand how animals would respond to sudden, unpredictable shortages of food.

They discovered that those animals who experienced these unexpected food shortages, would find themselves bingeing when the food supply returns to normal.

How does this cause weight gain?

If you are a yo-yo dieter then your brain will think that there is a threat of famine. This will cause you to overeat when food is available in preparation of this famine.

Unfortunately this evolutionary throw-back is no longer needed in the modern world as food for most people is readily available.
