A recent study that was published in the Nutrition Journal has revealed that eating nuts daily could help combat your obesity worries.
What did the study discover?
During the study of over 14,000 me and women, 25% were found to be less likely to be obese, with 21% shown to have a smaller waist circumference than those who did not eat nuts regularly.
Those who eat nuts regularly are often found to have a lower BMI (Body Mass Index), lower blood pressure, with higher levels of good cholesterol present in their body.
Why are nuts so beneficial?
Carol ‘O’Neil, a professor at Louisiana State University Agricultural Centre in the US, and lead author of the study had this to say about the results:
“Filled with plant protein, dietary fibre, and healthy mono-and polyunsaturated fatty acids, tree nuts are a satiating food that may actually help suppress appetite.”
Maureen Ternus, executive director of the International Tree Nut Council Nutrition Research & Education Foundation (INC NREF) also stated the following:
“Now that summer is here and people tend to be more active outside, tree nuts are a great, portable snack to take to camp, the beach or on a hike.”
“Just 1.5 ounces of nuts per day (about 1/3 cup) can give you many of the important vitamins, minerals and energy you need throughout the day.”
Which nuts should we be eating?
The following nuts are acceptable for consumption everyday:
- Brazil nuts
- Pine nuts
Just make sure to eat them in moderation, as even too much of a good thing can still cause weight gain to occur.
Also make sure to avoid those salty nut options, unsurprisingly the salt content will not make them suitable for you to eat during a weight loss attempt.
Are nuts a miracle for weight loss?
While this study has shown that those who eat nuts are often slimmer than those who don’t eat them on a regular basis this does not necessarily make them a miracle sure.
If you continue to eat junk food and think that eating a few nuts everyday will help you lose weight then you are likely going to be disappointed.
To lose weight effectively you will need to cut back on the junk and start eating healthier, which means adding more fresh fruits and vegetables to your current diet. You should also consider adding some protein-rich food sources too as this will help fill you up and keep you feeling fuller for longer.
Chicken, turkey and salmon are all good sources of protein that you should be eating regularly.
