Portion Control Tips

Portion Control Tips

To lose weight one of the most effective methods is to cut calories and to exercise more often, unfortunately for most of us calorie counting can become a chore, which makes success hard to come by.

Of course nowadays with smart phones there are numerous food trackers you can use, however some of you wont keep accurate track of your intake.

The next best thing you can try is portion control, which will help prevent you from overeating. Here are some portion control tips for weight loss success.

#1: Weigh your food

Our first tip for successful portion control is to take your time to weight your food.

Doing so will ensure you know exactly what your portion size is, so you know exactly what its nutritional and calorie content is.

While this method is one of the best for your home, it is not that practical for when you are out and about. I highly doubt you will be carrying a food scale around with you when you are at the shops.

Luckily there are a few other strategies that you can use.

#2: Use a portion plate

You can either buy a plate that has the correct portion amounts or you can simply estimate them.

For a healthy meal you should try to stick to the following portions:

  • 50% fruits and vegetables
  • 25% for protein
  • 25% for complex carbs or whole grains

#3: Pre-prepare portions

Preparing meals in advance can be a good way to ensure you stick to your diet, even when you are busy.

Using the same suggestions as the ‘portion plate’ you can cook and store your meals in separate tupperware containers.

#4: Guesstimate

While this is certainly not going to be the most accurate way to control your portions, it will be ok most of the time.

Here are some tips to help you guesstimate your portions:

  • 3 oz of protein (the ideal amount for one meal) is around the size of a deck of cards
  • 1 cup of vegetables is approximately the size of a tennis ball

You do not need to count calories to lose weight, portion control can be just as effective if you are able to stick to these tips.
