If your diet involves any form of calorie counting then it is essential that you are able to accurately estimate portion sizes.
Research by the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) has shown that people typically underestimate their consumption of grains, sweets and fat, while overestimate the consumption of fruit, milk, meat, poultry, fish, eggs and nuts.
Although a food scale or the various measuring cups and spoons will give a more accurate portion size this is not always practical, especially if you are out in a restaurant with family and friends.
