So you have decided to lose a few pounds and get a little fitter and healthier? Well, good for you.
No doubt you have made changes to your diet and made the decision to start working out more regularly.
This will undoubtedly be a good idea, but there are certainly things you need to be aware of. For example what you eat post-workout can have an impact on your results.
Remember exercise can only take you so far, as you have no doubt heard before, you cannot outdo a bad diet by training harder.
Lets look at some of these post-workout meal mistakes and how they can affect your weight loss efforts.
#1: Not eating a balanced meal
Some people will opt for a protein shake after working out, but skipping real food post-workout is certainly not recommended.
A protein shake is a supplement so should be consumed alongside your usual diet.
Make sure you consume carbs too, to help restore energy levels and to ensure your body burns this instead of your muscle.
#2: Leaving the meal too late after working out
After you have finished your workout your body is ready to receive the nutrients it needs to start the recovery process.
Leaving it too long is not recommended, as I have already mentioned. If you fail to provide adequate fuel to your body post-workout your body will start to break down muscle instead.
#3: You have no diet plan
To aid recovery then you need to feed your body adequately.
That means you need to eat a wide variety of foods to provide the nutrients it requires.
Protein is essential, but don’t forget about the carbs, fats and fibre too. A balanced diet is essential for looking and feeling your best.
#4: Not eating fats
Your body needs fat for a variety of bodily functions. Did you know that certain vitamins can only be absorbed when fat is present?
A lack of fat can also leave you feeling lethargic too, which is certainly not something you want to occur when working out.
Just opt for good fats such as those omega-3s fatty acids found in fatty fish, rather than processed fats found in junk food.
To get the best from your workouts you need to feed your body, a failure to do so will ensure you do not experience the results you had hoped for.
