How to Prevent Loose Skin After Weight Loss

How to Prevent Loose Skin After Weight Loss

Have you lost a significant amount of weight but are now forced to deal with the prospect of loose skin?

Even though you have now lost weight, this loose skin can still have a negative effect on your confidence. So what can you do to prevent loose skin after weight loss?

What causes this loose skin?

Your skin is a living organ that stretches and expands as you gain weight.

Unfortunately over time the elasticity of your skin will weaken, so when you do lose weight your skin does not simply return to its previous shape.

This results in the loose skin that you are currently experiencing.

Some people wont experience the same levels of loose skin as others, as there are various factors that will determine how much loose skin you will experience.

For example the amount of collagen or elastin has an impact, as well as your age, genetics and other lifestyle factors including exposure to the sun and smoking.

If you lose weight too quickly your skin will not have opportunity to adapt to your new size, so will unfortunately remain loose.

How to prevent loose skin?

The best way to prevent loose skin from occurring would be to avoid losing weight too quickly.

You really should only be aiming to lose between 1 and 2 pounds weekly.

You should also try to build some muscle mass too, while losing fat, as this will help to fill the space left from where your fat once was.

What about surgery?

There are non-invasive skin tightening procedures that a dermatologist will be able to perform, including radiofrequency and ultrasound procedures.

Unfortunately though if you have a significant amount of loose skin then the most effective treatment would be surgery.

With surgery the surgeon would be able to remove the extra skin from the various parts of your body, including your belly, bum, legs, arms and chest.

However, as with all types of surgery there will be health risks involved. This would be best discussed with a surgeon.

Usually you would have to have over 100 pounds of excess skin to be considered for surgery, and only on the condition that you were able to keep any weight lost off for 6 months.

What wont help with loose skin?

While you may be tempted by skin tightening creams or DIY body wraps the truth is that these treatments do not give lasting results.

What will occur is that these treatments will dehydrate your skin, which gives a temporary appearance of tighter skin.

Surgery, despite the risks and expense is certainly the better option.
