This diet has been around for a while, Elvis Presley was said to be a fan.
It involves sleeping between 7-9 hours each night, with stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol to be avoided as they can affect your sleep.
This extra sleep is said to help regulate your metabolic rate, which will encourage weight loss to occur.
Will the Sleeping Beauty diet help you lose weight?
There are a few reasons why a good nights sleep can help your weight loss efforts.
Firstly, a lack of sleep can leave you feeling tired and less able to resist the temptation of junk food that you are drawn to for an energy boost.
This lack of energy will also leave you less likely to visit the gym, which means you are not getting any exercise so are not able to burn off any extra calories.
Secondly, if you fail to get a good nights sleep then your bodies hormone production can be negatively affected.
Your body will likely produce more ghrelin, which is a hormone that tells you when you are hungry, plus your leptin levels will drop. Leptin is the hormone that tells you that you are satisfied.
This is a dangerous combination, as you will be more hungry and will be less satisfied with what you have eaten.
Finally, your body will produce more cortisol when tired. This is the stress hormone that can leave you unable to burn off fat.
Potential problems with the Sleeping Beauty diet?
The problem with the Sleeping Beauty diet is that people take the diet to extremes, with some reports stating that people have used sedatives to help them sleep for longer. In some cases as long as 20 hours per day.
Now, you maybe missing out on a few meals while you are sleeping, but I highly doubt sleeping this long is good for your health or sanity.
If you are tempted by this diet then stick to the 7-9 hour recommendation. Cutting the stimulants is also a good suggestion, but please don’t go to extremes to lose weight.
