Water Proven to Aid Weight Loss

Our bodies are made up of 60% water and it is important for a variety of reasons.

In a recent study it was shown that drinking water 30 minutes before you eat could help you to lose as much as 9 and a half pounds in just 12 weeks.

What did the study involve?

During the study volunteers were split into 2 groups. One group consumed around 17 ounces of water half an hour before eating their breakfast, lunch and dinner.

At the conclusion of the study those who consumed the water 30 minutes before eating lost 9 and a half pounds, while those in the control group lost just 1 and 3 quarters of a pound.

How much water do you need daily?

The following is the suggested daily water needs of men and women, according to the Institute of Medicine (IOM):

  • Women need 11 cups daily (1 cup is 8 ounces of water)
  • Men need around 16

Research has suggested that most of us do not get the recommended daily amount of water. 40% of those younger than 50, and between 50-80% of those over 50 don’t get enough.

How to make sure you are getting enough water?

One of the easiest ways to find out how much water you need daily is to divide your current weight by 2.

Water for weight lossFor example if you weigh 150 pounds, then you will need to consume 72 ounces of water daily, or 9 cups.

Of course your water consumption does not always have to come from the tap. You will find that most fruit and vegetables also contain water.

A good way to see if you are drinking enough water is to look at the colour of your urine. If it is too dark then you need to drink more water.

You may be worried about overdoing your water consumption, as you may have read about those who have died through excessively consuming it.

This condition called hyponatremia is extremely rare, and is only a real concern for endurance athletes as they lose electrolytes when they sweat, which is needed by the body, but is replaced with water instead.

If you stick to the recommended allowance then there will be no issue.

To make sure you are getting enough water make sure you keep a bottle to hand. This way there is no excuse as you can sip throughout the day and experience its weight loss benefits.
