While the health benefits of weight loss are well known, from a reduction in the risk of heart disease to helping reduce the chance of developing diabetes, there is less talk about how weight loss can help those with asthma.

A new study has shown that losing weight can also be of benefit to those who suffer with asthma.

In a study 16 patients who lost 16.5 kg over a 3 month period had experienced significant improvements in AHR, lung function, asthma severity, and asthma quality of life.

This is not the only study to show that weight loss is beneficial for those with asthma, as there have been a number of others that have proven its benefits.

So what is the best way to lose weight effectively?

Besides eating a healthy diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as healthy fibre and protein sources, you should also exercise regularly.

The following are some other tips that could help with your weight loss efforts:

#1: What is your motivation?

Why do you want to lose weight? Have a think about why you want to lose weight and write it down.

Once you have a list put it up somewhere that you can view it to serve as a reminder.

  • You are fed up of your tight clothes
  • You are breathless climbing the stairs
  • You struggle to keep up with your children
  • You have an upcoming event

#2: Make small, achievable goals

If you want to lose weight and keep it off long-term then it is no good setting unachievable goals for yourself.

Chances are if you fail to achieve them then you will feel like a failure and likely quit your efforts.

Did you know that a healthy weekly weight loss is only 1-2 pounds? With this in mind it is probably not achievable for you to lose 20 pounds in a single month.

Remember these small goals will add up over time and each time you achieve the goal you will find that you will remain motivated to reach the next goal.

#3: Reward yourself

When you achieve your small goals it may be a good idea to reward yourself for achieving it.

Doing so will encourage you further to achieving the next goal.

Just remember that you should not be rewarding yourself with food. Perhaps a new item of clothing or a spa day would be in order instead.

#4: Don’t give up

If you want to experience the health benefits of weight loss then you must not give up at the first sign of trouble.

Even if you have a bad day and overindulge, just dust yourself off ready to start afresh the following day.
