In a recent study conducted by Indian scientists Seema Gulati, Ph.D and Dr. Anoop Misra, M.D the weight loss benefits of pistachio have been revealed.
What did the study involve?
In the study the researchers split a group of 60 middle-aged adults into 2 groups. These participants were all at risk of diabetes or heart disease.
The first group were asked to eat a diet made up of 51% carbohydrates, 20% protein and 29% fat. This groups were also asked that around 20% of the calorie intake to come from pistachios.
The second of the groups were asked to eat a diet that consisted of 60% carbohydrates, 15% protein and 25% fat, these were not asked to eat any pistachios.
What were the results of the study?
At the end of the study those participants who ate the pistachios had a smaller waist than those who did not eat the nuts.
The researchers also noted that the cholesterol levels of the participants have lowered, with lower blood sugar levels too.
Why are pistachios good for you?
Pistachio nuts are a good source of protein and contain good fats too. Unlike fatty snack foods like chocolate and crisps, the fat found in pistachios are unsaturated so are a healthier alternative.
As you will need to crack open the shell of the pistachio to eat it, it will take longer to eat a handful of them. Meaning your brain has chance to realise that you are getting full, therefore you will consume fewer, and less calories.
Of course, as with anything healthy too much can be detrimental too. Even if they are good for you, you will still need to eat them in moderation otherwise the negatives will start to outweigh the positives.
