Weight loss benefits of Spinach

In a new study it has been discovered that Spinach could be the latest weight loss superfood that can apparently cut food cravings by nearly 95%.

What did the study involve?

A team of scientists at Lund University in Sweden looked at how spinach would impact on the eating habits of 38 overweight women.

Health benefits of SpinachOver the course of 3 months the women were given a green drink before breakfast, with half the participants given 5 grams of spinach extract with the others given a placebo.

Although the women did not know which group they belonged to they were asked to eat a balanced diet that included 3 meals a day.

What were the results of the study?

At the conclusion of the study those given the placebo lost an average of 3.5 kg, while those given the spinach extract lost an average of 5 kg.

According to the researchers there was a reason for this extra weight loss. As spinach extract contains thylakoids that apparently helps cut cravings while helping to keep you feeling satisfied all day.

Professor Charlotte Erlanson-Albertsson who took part in the study, had this to say:

“Our analyses show that having a drink containing thylakoids before breakfast reduces cravings and keeps you feeling more satisfied all day.”

“The thylakoid group also found that it was easier to stick to three meals a day – and they did not experience any cravings.”

It is believed that thylakoids help to slow down the digestion process, therefore giving your body chance to produce those hormones that tell it that you are satisfied.

“There is nothing wrong with our digestive system, but it doesn’t work well with the modern ‘pre-chewed’ food.”

“The thylakoids extend digestion, producing a feeling of satiety.”

“This means that we are able to stick to the diet we are meant for without snacks and unnecessary foods like sweets, crisps and such.”

Other health benefits of Spinach

Spinach is full of nutrients that offer various health benefits including:

  1. Iron that can help improve the function of red blood cells, allowing better energy levels and increased vitality.
  2. Vitamin K for maintaining bone health.
  3. Carotenoids such as beta carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin that are anti-inflammatory and anti-cancerous.
