5 Weight Loss Drugs That Really Work

There are various weight loss drugs that claim to be miracles but the reality is that many of them are ineffective and wont produce the results you would expect.

That is not to say that all weight loss drugs are ineffective, as there are some that really do work.

For example, a recent study at the University of California has shown that there are at least 5 weight loss drugs that actually work, with one even available in the UK.

This study analysed results from nearly 30,000 overweight or obese adults who had used these weight loss drugs.

What research was undertaken?

During the study there were 28 randomised clinical trials performed, with close to 30,000 participants (the majority of whom were female).

These participants had an average age of 46, with their average weight being 222 pounds (BMI of 36.1/classed as obese).

The participants were then either given a weight loss drug or a placebo that they were then asked to use for a complete year.

What were the results?

Of those who took the placebo, 23% managed to lose at least 5% of their bodyweight.

  • Phentermine-topiramate – 75% (19.4 pounds average)
  • Liraglutide – 63% (11.7 pounds average)
  • Naltrexone-bupropion – 55% (11 pounds)
  • Lorcaserin – 49% (7.1 pounds)
  • Orlistat – 44% (5.7 pounds)

While the drug names were used for the study. You may know these weight loss drugs by their brand names:

  • Orlistat: Xenical, Alli
  • Lorcaserin: Belviq
  • Naltrexone-bupropion: Contrave
  • Phentermine-topiramate: Qsymia
  • Liraglutide: Saxenda

How can you get these weight loss drugs?

Usually to be able to get a prescription for these weight loss drugs you would need to be classed as obese, which means that your BMI or Body Mass Index is over 30.

To get a prescription you will also need to be suffering from a weight-related condition too. For instance type 2 diabetes, hypertension or hyperlipidemia.

While these weight loss drugs have been shown to be successful, you need to understand that many of side effects.

It maybe a better idea to stick to more traditional methods, and to only resort to medication if you are not seeing the results you would expect and your health was suffering because of it.
