What is Yacon Syrup?

Yacon Syrup originates from the yacon plant, which is a root vegetable that you will find growing in the Andes Mountains. Yacon is often called ‘Jicama’ in Ecuador, although this is actually a different plant. It is also known as the Peruvian Ground Apple.

The syrup itself is found in the root of this plant and can be used as a replacement for sugar.

People from Peru, Brazil and Bolivia have long eaten this plant to treat a variety of digestive ailments.

Yacon SyrupAs Yacon Syrup contains 50% FOS (fructooligosacharide) it is sweet tasting so is ideal for sweetening desserts, coffee, cereals or anything really.

This FOS is not processed by your body so you can use it without the worry of weight gain that using sugar or artificial sweeteners cause.

FOS also contains fibre and polyphenols (antioxidants) that can help fill you up and prevent numerous health conditions such as, heart disease and certain types of cancer.

Studies on animals have also shown that the FOS found in Yacon Syrup can reduce your cholesterol levels and strengthen the immune system.

Yacon Syrup benefits

The following benefits may be experienced through the use of Yacon Syrup:

  • Increased metabolism
  • Fewer food cravings
  • Weight loss
  • Lower blood sugar levels
  • Relieve constipation

How can Yacon Syrup help with weight loss?

There are a few different reasons why Yacon Syrup could help you to lose weight.

For a start it is believed to help promote healthy bacteria (such as Bifidus and Lactobacillus) to keep your colon and digestive system running smoothly.

This helps as when you are not digesting your food correctly it is not removed properly from your body and is instead stored.

Another belief is that replacing sugar and artificial sugars with Yacon Syrup will reduce the amount of calories you are consuming.

You will also not experience the sugar highs and lows that often result in food cravings.

Can Yacon Syrup help fight Diabetes?

The issue with Diabetics is that they do not produce or properly use insulin, which means that it can be dangerous for them to experience their blood sugar levels rising too quickly.

Yacon Syrup contains high levels of inulin, which is a non-assimilable (not able to be absorbed) sugar.

This means it is perfect for sweetening foods without causing issues with your Diabetes.

What did Dr Oz say about Yacon Syrup?

Although the famous Dr Oz had known about the benefits of Yacon Syrup for a while he decided that it would be best that he conducted his own study into its benefits before mentioning it on his show.

During the study 60 overweight women were asked to consume 1 teaspoon of Yacon Syrup with each meal for a period of 28 days.

They were not asked to change their diet or exercise habits during this time.

Despite 60 participants were asked, only 40 managed to complete the project, each of whom were asked to appear on the Dr Oz Show entitled ‘The Yacon Project’.

Here were the results of the study:

  • 73% of participants lost weight (29 out of the 40)
  • Around half of the participants lost 5 or more pounds
  • The average weight loss was 2.9lbs
  • Total weight loss for the group was 153lbs
  • 27 out of the 40 women would recommend Yacon Syrup to their friends

The results of this albeit small study were promising, with many of the women experiencing good results.

Just imagine what kind of results could be experienced if improvements had been made to their diet and exercise habits too.
